Rules, Conduct and Discipline

At Bishop Anstey Junior School we strive for an orderly, creative learning environment. Appropriate behaviour is expected of students at all times.

Arrival and Departure

School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 1:45 p.m.

  1. Students should be dropped off and collected in the parking lot close to the bridge.
  2. Students waiting for cars are allowed on the bridge while there is a teacher on duty until 2:15 p.m. Thereafter they must wait on the forecourt and on the gallery.
  3. Juniors (Form 2 to Form 5) may study quietly while they wait.
  4. The School is not responsible for children who arrive before 7:00 a.m. or leave after 3:15 p.m.
  5. Children not involved in after school activities should be collected promptly at the end of the school day. Parents must notify the school if students must leave the premises to attend medical appointments and/or family emergencies.
  6. Parents are not allowed to make any direct contact with their children when school is in session (7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.). Any contact, including during break and lunch, must be made through. the school office.
  7. Parents are expected to co-operate and assist by ensuring that students are brought to school on time.

Traffic Congestion

Please be reminded that owing to our limited parking area, parents are encouraged to:

  1. Pack bags and lunch kits in the body of the car - not in the trunk.
  2. Organise all fees, lunch money etc. before you arrive at the school gate.
  3. Follow the directions of the Security Guard/Traffic Director. It is his job to assist in providing order.
  4. It is against our rules to sound your car horns in front of the gate. Please be considerate.
  5. Please co-operate by parking sensibly and leaving sufficient room for a smooth flow of traffic.

Security

When school is in session, our Security System is in place and on entry, the guard will ask visitors to the School their names and the purpose of their visit for clearance with the office. They will also be asked to sign a register, stating their name, purpose, time in and time out.

Absence and Punctuality

  1. Punctuality is expected at all classes
  2. Students are not expected to be absent from school except in the case of illness. All students are expected to attend school every school day. However, if the student is expected to be away for more than two (2) days, the school office must be notified. On the return to school after absence, a note must be sent to the form teacher.
  3. If a child has to be removed from the school during school hours, a note must be sent by a parent to that effect.
  4. We hope that parents will plan family holidays during the school vacation, but where this is not possible, the school must be informed in advance. In such instances, it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that the syllabus is covered by their children.

Uniforms

Junior Girls (Form 2 to Form 5)

  • White uniform blouse, school tie, navy blue gored skirt (knee length), white socks and plain black shoes.
  • Hair adornment - red, black, navy or white.

Junior Boys

  • White uniform shirt-jac, navy blue shorts, navy blue socks, and plain black shoes.
  • Shorts must not be longer than just above the knee.

Preparatory Girls (Prep 1 to Form 1)

  • Uniform checked dress with matching knickers, white socks, and black shoes.
  • Hair ribbons if worn, must match their uniform dresses.

Preparatory Boys

  • Uniform checked shirt jac, navy blue shorts, navy blue socks, and plain black shoes.
  • Shorts must not be longer than above the knee.

Physical Educations (P.E.) Uniform

  1. White T-shirts with school logo, shorts in house colours and black athletic shoes. P.E. uniform (Forms 2 to 5) should be worn only for P.E. or dancing periods and changed immediately thereafter if the class is scheduled before lunch. Students do not need to change if the P.E/Dance class is scheduled after lunch.
  2. T-shirts and strings attached to shorts must be tucked inside.
  3. Prep I — Form I students must wear their P.E. uniforms to school
  4. A student attending school out of uniform or with an incomplete uniform (P.E. uniform included) must bring a written excuse.

Uniforms and Personal Hygiene

  1. Uniforms should be clean, tidy and complete at all times.
  2. Shoelaces must be tied
  3. No jewelry must be worn in school except a watch with a plain band. Alarms are not allowed.
  4. Girls with pierced ears may wear sleepers or very small gold or silver studs (only one pair.)
  5. Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back.
  6. No nail polish is allowed.
  7. Strict personal hygiene must be practiced at all times.

School Rules

Property

  1. Children are expected to respect school property and the property of others. Accidental or intentional damage must be reported promptly to the school office and the item must be paid for or replaced.
  2. All clothes and possessions must be clearly marked with the owner’s name. The school takes no responsibility for unmarked property. Students are to be taught to take responsibility for their belongings.
  3. Money and valuables must not be left in desks. These should be handed to a teacher for safekeeping or lodged in the school office.
  4. No student must interfere with any other student’s desk or property.
  5. No personal toys or games are to be brought to school.

Out of Bounds

  1. No student may enter a classroom other than his/her own without permission.
  2. No student may enter the School Office, the Staff Rooms, Music Room, AV Room, Computer Room, Library or Sick Room without permission from a teacher.
  3. Students are not allowed in the Caretakers's quarters.
  4. No student is allowed beyond the perimeter fence at any time.
  5. On arriving at school, students are to take their bags/lunch kits to their classrooms, pack their desks and return to the forecourt. At Break time and after the second Lunch bell, students must not be in classrooms unless it is raining. They must play in the driveway or on the forecourt.
  6. Students must not go to the playing field unless accompanied by a teacher.
  7. Ball games and wild play are not allowed on the forecourt at any time.
  8. Students are not allowed to play on the gallery or to walk beyond the white line where the teachers’ cars are parked.
  9. Students are allowed fifteen (15) minutes after dismissal to ensure they have all their books and belongings. No student is allowed re-entry to the classroom after 2:00 p.m.
  10. Parents and visitors must not enter the classrooms unless invited by the form mistress or specialist teacher.

Homework

  1. Homework is any assignment that is to be completed outside of class.
  2. Homework is given on a regular basis at the teacher's discretion throughout the school.
  3. Parents are expected to ensure that the work set has been done properly.
  4. Homework is recorded in the Homework Note Book, which must be signed every day by the teacher and the parent.
  5. Parents must initial written homework assignments.
  6. Parents are asked to monitor the work that children are given and to sign the homework book when the tasks have been completed. Parents and teachers often use this book to communicate with each other except where sensitive topics are concerned.

Outings (Please refer to outing policy)

Outings are an essential part of the school programme. These are usually organised each term and attendance is required. No students can take part without written consent from a parent or guardian. Form teachers will inform parents if there is an entrance fee or transport charge.

Religious Instruction

This school is run by a Board of Management appointed by the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese and is mandated to require all students attending the school to participate in our morning assemblies, church services and religious instruction.

Library Fines

  1. Books are loaned to students for one week but may be renewed.
  2. A fine of $1.00 per week will be charged for each week or portion of a week that the book is kept overtime.
  3. After two weeks, the book must be replaced or an amount to cover the cost must be contributed.

Discipline

Students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times. Unacceptable behaviour includes:

  1. Stealing
  2. Cruelty, bullying of others
  3. Truancy, excessive absences, excessive late coming
  4. Disobedience, impertinence, defiance, impudence
  5. Defacing/destroying school material or property
  6. Untruthfulness, unreliability, cheating
  7. Obscenity, profanity
  8. Inattention, disorderliness, carelessness in homework or class work
  9. Fighting, aiding and abetting fighting, being quarrelsome, throwing temper tantrums
  10. Bad manners

Acts of indiscipline will be dealt with in the following ways:

  1. Warning by teacher
  2. Reprimand or scolding
  3. Isolation in or out of class
  4. Withdrawal of privileges
  5. Order Marks, Pink Slips, Conduct Marks or Detentions.
    • Order Marks are given for poor work or minor misdemeanours.
    • Conduct Marks are given for extreme unacceptable behaviour.
    • Pink slips are given for unacceptable behaviour at infant level. Parents are notified immediately and are asked to sign and return the Pink Slip.
  6. Warning by the Principal after 8 order marks or 2 detentions.
  7. Parents contacted and apprised of situation.
  8. Suspension after three (3) detentions.
  9. Warning by the Principal after two (2) suspensions.
  10. Expulsion after three (3) suspensions.

      The following structure applies to consequences:

      • 3 Pink Slips = Meeting with Principal and Teacher
      • 4 Order Marks = I Detention
      • 1 Conduct Mark = 1 Detention
      • 3 Detentions = 1 Suspension
      • 3 Suspensions = Expulsion

    Detention

    Detentions are given after four (4) Order Marks, or one (1) Conduct Mark. Students will be given a written notice to inform their parents and will be expected to stay late on a particular day to do that detention, usually 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., supervised by a teacher on duty.

    Parents are asked to support the School in teaching students that there are consequences for unacceptable behaviour.

    Cheating

    Any student found cheating will not receive any prizes for the corresponding academic prize giving Parents will be informed immediately.

    Stealing

    Prep 1 to Form 3

    • Meeting with the parents
    • A stern warning to the student
    • Suspension for second offence
    • Community Service as Penitence

    Form 4 to Form 5

    • Meeting with the parents
    • Immediate suspension
    • Community Service as Penitence
